A poor Nicaraguan congregation trusts in God’s faithfulness.

But I am like an olive tree

flourishing in the house of God;

I trust in God's unfailing love

for ever and ever.

Psalm 52:8

It's not often that we in Canada see an "open-air" church. And it's not often that we see a tree growing in the middle of any church building.

The members of Iglesia Evangelica Jerusalem Mision on Ometepe Island in Nicaragua are not going for a "breezy" atmosphere. They're not trying to be "seeker-friendly" or on some cutting edge of church architecture.

The truth is that their last church building, just across a dirt yard from this one, no longer holds their congregation. So they have begun, in faith, to build a new, larger building. The roofless building already hosts a women's livelihood project supported by Samaritan's Purse that helps local women learn craft skills and earn money for their families.

But on an island where most live in poverty, money and materials to build an entire church building are scarce. Confident in God's provision, the congregation is choosing to construct the building as resources become available.

In the meantime, the church is being built around a tree that provides desperately-needed shade and protection from the elements for church members as they meet to worship God.

The faith of this group of dedicated Nicaraguans challenges me.

They do not have the resources they need to complete the job, but they trust in God to supply their needs. They build in faith. Their partially-finished structure is a testimony to their community, that they are choosing to trust God in all circumstances. And they build around a firm structure -- a tree -- that provides shade and protection even while they wait for God to show His provision.

Where are you today? Are you stepping out in faith, unable to see the end result but confident that God will provide? Are you building your life around His Word, shaded and protected by His love? Are you "flourishing in the house of God?"
