Our Work
Bringing Hope to Nepal
In a remote, mountainous region of Nepal, just south of Mount Everest, a physician
who works at one of the mission hospitals supported by Samaritan’s Purse met a young
woman.
This young woman had contracted polio when she was two years old, resulting in severely
deformed legs. When the doctor met her, she was crawling through the forest unable
to stand upright or walk.
For 22 years, the woman had crawled on the ground using her sandals on her hands
to protect them from the rough paths in the region. Her family was extremely poor
and unable to access medical care because of the costs. She had only gone to school
for a very short time because she had to crawl for one hour each way to get to the
school.
The physician asked how he could help her; she simply replied that she would like
to walk again. Samaritan’s Purse Canada was contacted and a church in Calgary offered
to help fund the medical care needed to help her walk again.
The young lady was transferred to Kathmandu and underwent 6 operations on her legs
to help straighten them. She then underwent more than a year of physiotherapy.
During her time in hospital, she was taken care of by a partner of Samaritan’s Purse,
which is run by a local Nepali church. They care for others who need medical care
and show the love of Christ through this work. During the many months of rehabilitation
as an outpatient, she lived with the church community.
After the long and difficult treatment, the young lady’s dream was fulfilled; she
can walk again. She continues to stay with the church community as she receives
vocational training so that when she returns to her village, she can support herself
and her elderly mother.
Her story, one of both physical and spiritual healing, is a story that is common
in Nepal as a result of the vital partnership between Samaritan`s Purse and local
partners such as this church.
