HURRICANE RELIEF: Samaritan’s Purse is responding by deploying Relief Teams of Canadian volunteers.

Our Work

A Helping Hand in Nicaragua

In the early morning of Sept. 4, 2007, Hurricane Felix made landfall in Nicaragua, just north of Puerto Cabezas.  By that evening major damage from winds and flooding had taken its toll, leaving thousands displaced from their homes.

Francisca Thomas Bowie was left a widow when her husband was killed during the hurricane. On top of the grief of losing her spouse, Bowie was pregnant with her seventh child. Francisca’s brother-in-law, Aronimo, built a temporary shack next to his house for his nephews and their mother.

Samaritan’s Purse, through contacts established through the Operation Christmas Child program, approached Aronimo to ask if he would be willing to help a Samaritan’s Purse Relief Team build a home for Francisca. Through tears of relief and gratitude, Aronimo agreed.

Working alongside Relief Team members, a new home was built for the family.

“It was an awesome feeling to see the kids running around in their new house, smiling and having a good time knowing they were home again,” said Scott Langford, the Relief Team leader. “The good part was that not only was a house built, but lives were rebuilt and the family can now begin the healing process all in the name of Jesus Christ.”

The Relief Team, a group of Canadian volunteers who stepped in to help with clean up and home rebuilding in the wake of Felix, had a hard time leaving afterwards because of the bond that was formed between the kids and family members.
