Community Health Education
The work of Samaritan’s Purse always reflects a crucial
aim: to empower a community spiritually and physically, so the community can secure
its own sustainable future.
Water for Life
In the village of Kambanje, Malawi, the work of Samaritan’s
Purse water interns and partners has had a strong impact on the community.
The interns built and installed filters, while helping
villagers learn about health and hygiene.
Now, families like Richard Mlinga’s understand the importance
of hand-washing. Mlinga’s entire household of seven – plus extended family – wash
their hands with soap before and after meals.
With the filter and good health practices, says Mlinga,
diarrhea and upset stomachs are a thing of the past.
Alongside the construction and installation of BioSand Water Filters, Samaritan’s
Purse staff, partners, and interns educate communities through Biblically-based
health and hygiene training. As families are learning simple ways to care for their
own health, communities are changing for the better – bringing about a new quality
of life.
Samaritan’s Purse engages each community in its own health and hygiene education
through interactive activities, games, and illustrations that transcend culture
or language barriers. Along with learning how to use and maintain their BioSand
Water Filter, families learn about latrines, the concept of germs and how they are
transmitted, and how and when to wash hands. All the while, Samaritan’s Purse empowers
volunteers from the community to act as health educators who monitor and encourage
good health practices and Godly principles.
Studies have shown that hygiene education and hand-washing reduce the spread of
diarrheal diseases by 45 per cent. Combining this education with the BioSand Water
Filter will greatly improve the health of a community. As Samaritan’s Purse teaches
and empowers communities, not only are lives saved through simple physical health
practices, but children, parents and grandparents are encouraged to make choices
based on hope for a secure, eternal future.
