BELIEVING IN THE BSF: A technician works with BioSand Water Filter recipients to fill a mold with concrete.

Turn on the Tap: Impact stories, Africa.

“At first I didn’t believe what the project manager was talking about,” says Alex Makio. “The prevention of typhoid by using the BioSand Water Filter, I didn’t believe. Not until I brought one filter to my family and we started using it.”

Alex recently began working as a technician with the Samaritan's Purse Household Water Program in Ngangani, Kenya. As part of his employment, Alex was able to bring a filter to his family farm.

“My family members, including me, were ever suffering from diarrhea, year in and year out before I joined this project,” Alex says. “At first my parents used to treat water by boiling it or by using chemicals, but all in vain. The two methods proved ineffective since the chemicals were expensive and sometimes unavailable in shops and we could not keep the correct measurements when mixing the chemicals with water. The boiling method was expensive in terms of the firewood and time. The hot water was still dangerous since it can burn someone before cooling.”

One Sunday after church, Alex noticed a Samaritan's Purse poster advertising for water program technicians. Alex applied and within two weeks he was part of the start up project in his community of Kinyaata.

“Children here now stay in school for full months without a complaint of stomach problems and diarrhea,” Alex says. “My parents had to spend a lot of money on treatment of water borne diseases. Most of their income went into medication and treatment of the water borne diseases. My parents have now been able to do developments in our family using the money that they were spending on medication. My sisters and brothers have also improved in their academic performance. I thank God, for He has heard our cry.”
