Samaritan's Purse Disaster Relief: Past Activities
Samaritan's Purse has been providing spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world since 1970.
Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines (2013)
Recorded as the strongest storm to make landfall, Super Typhoon Haiyan wreaked havoc in the central Philippines in November 2013, affecting approximately 12 million people and taking the lives of more than 6,000. Samaritan’s Purse immediately deployed a Disaster Assistance Response Team to the region to provide emergency food, water, shelter, and medical care. We partnered with local churches, governments, and the Schistosomiasis Control and Research Hospital, as well as other NGOs, to deliver aid to hundreds of thousands of people. Videos about our response can be seen here. Samaritan’s Purse has worked in the Philippines for more than 20 years and is continuing to help families recover from Typhoon Haiyan.
Flooding in Southern Alberta (2013)
In the summer of 2013, Samaritan’s Purse launched its largest ever disaster response on Canadian soil. Severe flooding in southern Alberta displaced approximately 100,000 people from their homes, causing widespread destruction in communities including Calgary, High River, Black Diamond, Medicine Hat, and the Siksika First Nation. Samaritan’s Purse deployed three Disaster Relief Units and mobilized 5,000 volunteers to help clean out and disinfect nearly 800 homes. Samaritan’s Purse launched the ongoing Southern Alberta Restoration Project to help families repair their homes.
Flooding in the Philippines (2012)
In August, flooding caused by torrential rains displaced tens of thousands of families on southern Luzon Island and the Metro Manila area in the Philippines. Samaritan's Purse partnered with churches by supporting 10 local volunteer teams to clean up the 10-15 cm of mud and debris that filled schools, clinics, and other public buildings. Eighteen schools were cleaned and 14,000 students were able to resume classes. Again in December 2012, Samaritan's Purse helped our partners respond to Typhoon Bopha, which destroyed much of Compostela Valley.
Flooding in Nicaragua (2012)
Flooding often afflicts people living in the municipality of Rosita, Nicaragua, damaging crops and leaving families at risk of starvation. In the past two years, Samaritan's Purse (in partnership with local Christian ministries) has distributed emergency food - including rice, beans, sugar, and cooking oil - to 400 families in 14 communities.
In July, a tropical storm left the city of Nueva Guinea flooded. Three rivers in the area overflowed, flooding crops, damaging homes, filling latrines and wells, and forcing over 250 families into emergency shelters. Samaritan's Purse responded by providing emergency food hampers and purified water.
Severe Weather in Peru (2012)
Extensive flooding and an extremely cold winter caused loss of food crops, animal fodder, and livestock in the region of Puno, Peru. The weather also posed threats to people's health and lives-especially the young and elderly.
Through our partners, Samaritan's Purse distributed emergency supplies, including food, to 1,500 families, clothing to 700 people, and tools to 30 communities. Thanks to our donors' generosity, we also funded medical clinics that treated 4,000 patients.
Flooding in Pakistan (2012, 2011, 2010)
Some regions of Pakistan are vulnerable to extreme flooding that has devastating effects each year. Together with local Christian partners, we have provided practical assistance such as tents, hygiene kits, clean water, and medical care for thousands of suffering families.
Emergency Relief in Ethiopia (2011)
Samaritan's Purse distributed maize, beans, and oil to over 15,600 famished Ethiopians in the Gelena District from October to December. More than 50 metric tons of nutritional supplement were also provided to 4,000 malnourished children under the age of five and to pregnant and lactating women.
Japan Earthquake and Tsunami (2011)
Within hours of the devastating earthquake and subsequent tsunami that struck Japan in March 2011, Samaritan's Purse was in contact with a network of church partners desperate to help the victims. We provided supplies such as food, blankets, hygiene kits, and other essentials.
We also helped mobilize local teams to clean up flooded houses with small pick-up trucks loaded with generators, power washers, and clean-up tools. Thousands of volunteers from around the world were also mobilized by Samaritan's Purse to help remove debris and rebuild damaged homes.
Working from three bases, volunteers and staff cleaned out mud, mold, and debris from more than 350 homes and reconstructed 300 homes. Since the earthquake and tsunami, nearly 40 Canadians served as staff or volunteers with Samaritan's Purse.
Earthquake in Myanmar (2011)
Working through partners in the area, Samaritan's Purse used your donations to provide water, tarps, and food to people affected by a 6.8 magnitude earthquake that struck northeast Myanmar in March 2011.
Crisis in Libya (2011)
Thousands of people fleeing violence in Libya created a refugee crisis along the borders with Tunisia and Egypt. Samaritan's Purse equipped partners with food and other necessities to assist those stranded in the desert.
Crisis in Egypt (2011)
In the midst of political crisis that swept through Egypt in January, Samaritan's Purse stood alongside our Christian partners in prayer for peace. We provided support for our partners to reach out into their communities, enabling them to supply several families with furniture and kitchen appliances, financial support, and inventory for their businesses which had been destroyed.
Our church partner in Egypt also provided emergency food relief in Syria and Jordan during the Arab Spring and Summer.
Sri Lanka Flooding (2011)
Samaritan's Purse and our partners provided hygiene kits to hundreds of families with young babies who were affected by severe flooding. Local teams were mobilized to clean up drinking water wells that had been contaminated by the flood water.
Severe Weather in Vietnam (2011)
Northwest Vietnam experienced one of the coldest winters in many years and tens of thousands of cattle and other livestock died due to starvation and exposure. Samaritan's Purse distributed emergency animal feed to rural communities who rely on livestock for their livelihoods, as well as providing winter clothing for vulnerable children.
