Helping Families Raise Healthy Children
A village health worker in remote Vietnam is committed to helping families be as healthy as possible, and has benefitted from training and equipment from Samaritan’s Purse.
Venh Seo Thao is a father of three school-aged children and is committed to helping families in his community raise healthy children.
Two-thirds of people in northern Vietnam’s Lu Than Commune, including Venh’s village of Chin Chu Phin, live below the poverty line. Education levels are also low among the largely ethnic minority population.
“People didn’t know the importance of nutrition for their children’s health,” said Venh. In his role as a village health worker, he strives to teach families the basics of good health, including the importance of hand-washing and home cleanliness, cooking nutritious and affordable foods, and monitoring children’s development.
Although he has served in this role for several years, Venh is grateful for the training and support he’s received from Samaritan’s Purse since 2012.
We’ve equipped him with a scale and the skills to regularly measure children in his village in order to identify those in need of nutritional interventions. A Samaritan’s Purse nurse then brings the necessary supplements for the families each month. She also uses these monthly visits to help build Venh’s capacity in areas like record-keeping and child development.
Even beyond his job, Venh is a role model in his community. Samaritan’s Purse has provided training and seeds for families to grow nutritious vegetables to improve their diets. The success of Venh’s garden has been an example and an encouragement to others.
Venh’s compassion for his neighbors is evident and he is growing in confidence too. “I feel I am much better trained now to help my community,” he said with a smile. “Since the project started, families now practice better hygiene. Their home environments are cleaner and most importantly, children are healthier.”
He is hopeful, but knows there are continued challenges. “There are still many poor families and children suffering with malnutrition. Samaritan’s Purse has provided many people with home gardens and training, which has been valuable, but the needs are still great.”
Please pray for our staff as they invest in the lives of people like Venh, seeking opportunities to satisfy hungry stomachs and hearts through the “Bread of Life” (John 6:35, NIV).
