Samaritan’s Purse work in High River continues with Spring Clean-Up Days (June 21, 2014)

There’s something comforting about having someone come by and plant flowers in a bed that hasn’t seen life since flood waters washed it all away a year ago, Frank King says.

The Samaritan’s Purse spokesman told the Sun it’s about connecting with a community while continuing the still much-needed work in High River, even this far removed from the flood of summer 2013.

Saturday, the organization hosted its last of three High River Spring Clean-Up Days in the town to Calgary’s south.

Several hundred volunteers showed up, King said, taking on what he called “community enhancement work,” raking out yards and planting new flowers and greenery.

King said there are still many people who need help — still a lot of people feeling defeated and shell shocked over the disaster that landed in their backyard.

“There’s still folks in High River who refused to actually get their homes fixed until this year’s flood season had passed,” King said.

“There’s definitely that level of trepidation.

“There’s also a level of significant difficulty dealing with the insurance process or the government assistance process,” he said, noting Samaritan’s Purse has also been helping with that.

In addition to High River Spring Clean-Up Days the organization continues with its Southern Alberta Restoration Project.

They aim to help get 70 displaced families back into their homes, he said.

Currently, they’re assisting in restoring about 30.

In a release issued earlier in the week Samaritan’s Purse projects director Darren Tosh said, “It will be a lot of work, but an absolute joy to see those families cared for.”

King echoed that sentiment, saying he’s taken a lot of pride in building relationships and trust with residents of High River, and hearing their individual stories while helping them to move on.
