Samaritan's Purse Costa Rica Family Team
This coming Christmas holiday, Samaritan’s Purse Canada is inviting families from across Canada on a very exciting trip to Costa Rica. It is going to be an excellent and challenging experience that you do not want to miss!
Samaritan’s Purse (SPC) will be taking a team of families from Canada over the Christmas/New Year’s holiday to experience the work of Samaritan’s Purse taking place in Costa Rica. Team size will not exceed 30 participants and we recommend that children be at least 10 years old. The team will fly from Calgary or Toronto into the Liberia, Costa Rica. Working alongside SPC’s Costa Rican ministry partners, the team will spend their time participating in Operation Christmas Child shoebox distributions, children’s ministry, and other outreach projects.
Operation Christmas Child is a Christian ministry. Through this ministry, we want to remind children that they are loved and not forgotten, and we want to offer them an unconditional gift that brings joy to their hearts. Our greatest joy and hope is to share the love of Christ and the message of the Gospel with the children by reminding them of the greatest gift of all – the Christmas Child – Jesus Christ. At most distribution events, a short Gospel presentation will be made.
Many children who receive a shoebox gift are offered the opportunity to participate in a discipleship program (called The Greatest Journey). This 12-part program helps children to know Jesus, follow Him every day, and share their faith with others.

Partner and Team Hosts: SP Canada has been working with Moviendo Esperanzas in Costa Rica for many years through Operation Christmas Child, disaster relief, and mission teams. The Moviendo Esperanzas staff is passionate about the development of Costa Rican communities that find themselves in vulnerable conditions. An assessment team conducts extensive research in potential communities to determine the most pressing needs, while working collaboratively with community leaders to determine local solutions. One of Moviendo's strategies is to empower churches in the region, regardless of their denomination, with basic tools and resources to reach vulnerable families. A very holistic approach is employed that seeks to address spiritual, physical, social, and economic needs.
Country Description: Costa Rica, located in Central America, is bordered by Nicaragua, Panama, the Caribbean Sea, and the Pacific Ocean. The country is home to a large variety of rivers, plains, mountains, valleys, flora, fauna, volcanoes, beaches, protected areas, and biological reserves. Travelers flock to Costa Rica to enjoy beautiful beaches, delicious coffee, and friendly people. However, there is another side to Costa Rica; a side where pain and despair exist. Beyond the lush landscapes and shimmering blue waters is a land increasingly characterized by desperation. domestic violence, teenage pregnancy, drug abuse and alcoholism that are tearing at the fabric of both urban and rural society. It is in this challenging context that long time Samaritan’s Purse partner Moviendo Esperanzas (Moving Hope) has been faithfully serving the least, the lost, and the last of Costa Rica.
