Yulia's Story

When war came to Yulia’s home in Ukraine, her daughter and grandson managed to escape to safety. Yulia stayed behind to care for her paralyzed husband. Their food supply was low, the electricity was completely out, and Yulia struggled with pain from an untreated medical condition. Everything was decimated, including the local hospital. “When we went outside, we saw there were no buildings—they were destroyed,” she said.

Yulia wasn’t sure how they would survive and she suffered while waiting for liberation. When it finally came, she was in critical need of medical care. And an ambulance took her to a Samaritan’s Purse Emergency Field Hospital.

Emergency Care When Everything Else Is Gone

War and disaster often overwhelm or destroy healthcare systems. An Emergency Field Hospital, along with other relief supplies like food, water, and shelters, becomes a lifeline when everything else is gone.

As Yulia stepped into our facility—which was strategically hidden among the sea of dilapidated buildings and homes—she was taken into the emergency room. There, our doctors and nurses from all over the world began to examine her condition. Her pain was intolerable, making her too sick to speak or even sit up properly. The doctors discovered she was at risk of dying without urgent surgery. Hours after arriving, Yulia received it.

“Your surgeon touched my wound and looked at me closely. He showed me his attention. Your nurses here are real sisters of mercy. I have never experienced this kind of care and kindness,” she said.
