Rahina’s Story

Agape Church in the Philippines started with a garden. In a struggling mining village, one of our partners secured land to teach organic gardening so families could have something to eat every day. They gave seeds, tools, and training. They also shared the Gospel and started a new church, which is where Rahina went for help.

“I had nothing. I had no food, and my son was sick,” the widowed mother said. “Pastor Nector told me how Jesus is our healer and provider. I was hesitant, but then I experienced that God is the provider.” Through the church, Rahina received food, a job tending the plants, and prayer for her son, who was healed. “I said, ‘This is a true God,’ and decided to follow Him.”

Hunger Is a Desperate Crisis

More people are going hungry. In the last five years, the number of people facing hunger has risen by 150 million. War, extreme weather, and skyrocketing food prices are driving this rise. Today, 1 in 10 people do not know where their next meal will come from. Like Rahina, the majority of men, women, and children facing hunger live in Asia. But God can work through you to give nourishment and hope in Jesus’ Name.

Samaritan’s Purse Canada is working around the world to rapidly expand food projects to meet growing hunger needs. In 20 countries, agriculture and livelihood programs are vital to helping families access tools and training to grow safe, abundant, and nutritious food not only for today but well into the future. Each project adapts to the community, culture, and climate:

  • Beneficiaries like Rahina receive hands-on training in natural, inexpensive ways to raise plentiful crops and livestock. Techniques include protecting soil nutrients and growing complementary crops.
  • Agricultural training often happens at a training garden or community field.
  • Beneficiaries receive quality tools, seeds, livestock, and other materials to apply their new knowledge. Your gifts can help provide 5,000 agricultural items and 6,000 animals this year
  • After the initial training, our teams make regular visits to give families advice and support. This year, your gifts can help 10,000 people receive training in improved agriculture.
  • In some regions, Samaritan’s Purse Canada operates school feeding programs to help students facing malnutrition.
  • Emergency food distributions are also critical to save the lives of people facing sudden and severe hunger, such as Sudanese refugees of war fleeing to Chad.

Through every food project, God opens doors to point to His Word, share the Gospel, and offer discipleship groups.

Rahina now faithfully walks with Jesus Christ. She tells her neighbors about Him, and she’s been able to start her own bountiful garden. She tends to chickens and provides for her family. “I’m thankful for how God provides,” she said. And He can do it with just a few little seeds.
