Priya’s Story

“What I dreamed of turned upside down,” Priya* said, recalling when she was newly married. It wasn’t easy to share her story. As her heart overflowed, so did her tears.

She started shaking as she remembered aloud some of the pain that she experienced at the hands of her husband. With no one else to turn to for help, Priya finally fled the fear and abuse. Soon afterward, she arrived here with her two sons at a shelter in India, where your support helped her start a new chapter in her life. “I feel safe here,” she told us. “The children love this place.”

An Opportunity to Start Anew

Priya endured violence, neglect, and discrimination from those closest to her. Though she fled, she had no home or way to support herself or her sons. The experience is one lived every day by countless women worldwide, opening the door to more abuse and exploitation. But women like Priya can rise above these circumstances when they receive safety, opportunity, and access to resources, given in Jesus’ Name.

At our partner’s shelter in India, Priya found all these things. She received counseling to help her overcome some of the trauma she experienced. “Now I have love and peace,” she shared. Job skills training has also opened the door for her to support herself as she trains to be a tailor at the center, where women make jewelry, reusable sanitary pads, and other fair trade products.

Best of all, since arriving at the shelter just a few months ago and hearing the Gospel, Priya put her faith in Jesus Christ. She used to be a temple singer. Now, her voice can be heard around the compound singing praises to her newfound Savior.
