Henry’s Story

Henry* entered our Emergency Field Hospital dangerously dehydrated and weak, having gone without food for several days. He had lost everything when Hurricane Beryl tore through his home on the island of Carriacou, Grenada.

After taking shelter at a friend’s home during the violent storm, Henry returned to his house to find it flattened. Without family on the island, he was forced to seek refuge in an overwhelmed homeless shelter, and he also lost his daily seizure medication. “It was gone. No place of rest,” he shared. “What I had on me, that’s what I have.”

As the days passed, the sweltering heat combined with a lack of medication triggered one of Henry’s epileptic seizures. He was desperate for help.

Your gifts bring urgent medical care to those who need it most.

When Everything Is Gone

War and disaster often overwhelm or destroy healthcare systems. An Emergency Field Hospital and other relief supplies like food, water, and shelter become lifelines when everything else is gone.

On Carriacou, Samaritan’s Purse set up a field hospital after Beryl severely damaged the main hospital. Our hospital was the only facility offering inpatient care and lab work on the island.

When Henry arrived, he finally received his seizure medication. While he ate his first meal, an IV also revived his dehydrated body with much-needed fluids. Over the following days, Samaritan’s Purse medical staff nursed Henry around the clock and covered him in prayer. He gradually gained strength as the physicians shared the love of Christ with him through their care.

“Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is the upholder of my life.”
PSALM 54:4, ESV

Inside an Emergency Field Hospital

A Samaritan’s Purse Emergency Field Hospital and medical teams can be flown worldwide to operate in a disaster zone within hours. The hospital can be tailored to meet the needs of a response with modules that include:

  • Emergency Rooms

  • A Pharmacy

Since 2016, Canadian Disaster Assistance Response Team members have provided life-saving medical care more than twenty times, including in Ukraine, Haiti, Grenada, Italy, and Mozambique.
