The northeast India floods have caused unprecedented damage with 17 million people marooned. A total of 58 districts have been affected due to floods and resulting landslides in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam in the northeast. Assam was hit worst, with nearly 50 flood-related deaths so far in 26 districts.
Samaritan’s Purse has started to provide aid to flood victims, including blankets and tents for 250 families that have lost their homes, school supplies for 1,250 children, as well as 5,750 meals and basic medical care for 1,250 people. We are also working with local churches to distribute aid.
“All the churches are united together and engaged in the relief work. This is great news,” says a local pastor. “Now the flood waters have come down, but there are still thousands of people staying in relief camps. The major problem is cleaning the homes, fixing the houses and electricity. Most of the houses are not livable or damaged.”
He says relief supplies as well as Bibles are desperately needed, as most were destroyed in the floods. “What we need is Bibles, mattresses, clothes, blankets and pillows.” Samaritan’s Purse is working with local partners to help meet urgent needs.
Samaritan’s Purse also responded to flooding in Bihar, Assam, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh and distributed emergency aid including hundreds of tents and food assistance for more than 9,000 people in 2017.
Please join us in praying that our teams will shine the light of Christ into the lives of flood victims in India.
