Medical teams care for Nepal earthquake survivors

At a busy hospital near Kathmandu and in remote rural areas, Samaritan’s Purse is providing medical care for people injured in the catastrophic Nepal quake.

“My heart breaks for the people here in Nepal,” said Dr. Lance Plyler, head of the six-person medical team that is part of our emergency response. “There’s a lot of need. The people have very, very little. There is great physical need, and spiritual need. As a Christian organization we are trying to offer hope and the message of Christ to these people. We are praying we can deliver that kind of hope and love.”

At Anandaban Hospital, Samaritan’s Purse surgeons are working alongside Nepalese doctors to perform orthopedic operations and treat trauma-related injuries.

“We have an incredible team of orthopedic and general surgeons that are working with the Nepalese doctors to meet these urgent medical needs,” Dr. Plyler said.

The team includes orthopedic surgeon Dr. Lee McCluskey.

“I’m here to serve the people here, and to do it in a way that can be the salt and light for Christ,” he said.

We are also conducting medical brigades in isolated villages in the Himalayas that aren’t receiving any other outside help.

“Were able to provide simple wound care and pray for them,” Dr. Plyler said. “These people are desperate.”
