DISASTER READY

Equipped and Experienced

Our custom-built Disaster Relief Units are fully equipped command centers stocked with specialized recovery gear. These tractor-trailers carry personal protective equipment (PPE) and cleanup tools, including chainsaws, pumps, generators, and hand tools. Other specialized rolling equipment—including skid steers, cook kitchens, bunkhouses, showers, and 120 kW generators—allows our teams to operate self-sufficiently.

Our Hands-On Services for Homeowners Include:

  • Flood Recovery: We remove mud, debris, small amounts of water, damaged belongings, and wet drywall from homes. Afterward, we spray antimicrobial agents to help prevent mold and mildew.
  • Fire Recovery and Ash-Sifting: Our trained teams carefully sift the ashes of destroyed homes to recover cherished personal belongings and irreplaceable mementos.
  • Storm Response: Our teams, which include skilled sawyers, address tree damage, remove fallen debris, tarp damaged roofs, and secure homes from further loss.
  • Empowering Communities: Typically positioned at a local partner church, the Disaster Relief Unit becomes our command center, directly coordinating staff, volunteers, and resources within the affected area.

Our Response in Action

Upon receiving a request, the Samaritan’s Purse Canada response manager will work with local authorities to assess the needs, size, and scope of the event and our capacity to respond.

Once deployed, our on-site program manager will:

  1. 1.Liaise with the local emergency operations center (EOC) to identify the most heavily impacted areas.
  2. 2.Establish our base of operations, typically at a local church.
  3. 3.Promote a local phone number for homeowners to request assistance.
  4. 4.Mobilize and equip local and national volunteers to serve their neighbors.
  5. 5.Liaise with other NGOs and government agencies to ensure the most robust delivery of assistance to those affected by the disaster.

Response Programs

NEW: MASS CARE PROGRAM

Our teams can help shelter evacuated residents during a disaster. By managing the complexities of 24/7 site operations, we work with logistical excellence to alleviate pressure on local Emergency Support Services (ESS) and ensure resident have a community of compassionate care, dignity, and safety.

This is the only Samaritan’s Purse Canada response program that necessitates cost recovery from the requesting jurisdiction.

Program Highlights:

  • Shelter Capacity: Each unit can establish a 500-bed mass care center in a designated facility (such as a school or community center), providing a safe, comfortable, and caring environment for evacuees.
  • Comprehensive Resources: Each unit is stocked with 500 cots, 1,500 blankets, pillows, hygiene kits, privacy screens, and chairs.
  • Trained Responders: Our professional, vetted responders manage the center with compassion and efficiency, ensuring the needs of evacuees are met.
  • Mobile Units: Two fully equipped mobile units— one in Calgary, Alberta, serving Western Canada, and one in Hamilton, Ontario, serving Eastern Canada—are ready for rapid deployment.
