Church Guide to Disaster Response
Our full day workshop is meant to equip and prepare churches to effectively respond in the event of a disaster, while providing churches with tangible ministry and community ideas to their neighbour in the absence of crisis.
Throughout the day, we cover four key modules:
- Module 1:Ministry Team Development - Explore the practical elements of the formation of a leadership team composed of dedicated volunteers that can be deployed in times of disaster.
- Module 2:Asset Mapping - Empower your church by identifying, describing and mapping out all available resources that can be utilized in times of crisis.
- Module 3:Response Initiatives - Gain insight into the strategies that your church can employ during disasters through a structured approach and based on the resources at your disposal.
- Module 4:Recovery and Community Engagement - Learn how your church can support community efforts post-disaster by using a holistic approach to recovery, meeting the physical, financial, and psychosocial needs of those impacted.
- Tabletop Exercise - The day is concluded with a simulated disaster that allows attendees to practice what they’ve learned with their newly formed teams.
Ready to Respond: Equipped
The Journey of Ready to Respond
- Community Rallied: A devastating house fire rocks a community. Two houses and two families are deeply impacted. Their lives; spared. Their possessions; gone. With only the clothing on their backs a community rallies together and, within hours, have provided everything that these families needed and more for the foreseeable future. Local churches catch wind of what has occurred and reach out.
- Community Strengthened: An ice storm rocks specific regions in Ontario. A result that no one expected. Thousands of families impacted. Some without power for more than a week. A small community creates a Facebook page for people who are in need. Multiple comments appeared under each posted need. Food delivered. Warm clothing given. Generators loaned out. Snow cleared. Debris removed.
- Community Trained: A sudden drought him a region around Ottawa. A Level 3 Low Water Advisory was in effect. Some wells in the area had run dry and locals were hurting for water. A local church, inspired by a recent training session quickly realized that they have the resources to help their community leap into action. A water station is set up in their church parking lot with a deep and rarely used well as the source of hope. They advertise through social media that anyone can come to fill up water. The community breathes a sigh of relief and expresses gratitude for this simple expression of love.
