Esther’s Story

“I am a survivor,” Esther shared. She grew up in one of Kenya’s worst slums, where prostitution and crime run rampant. Despite her tumultuous upbringing in an abusive home, Esther dreamed of finishing university. But she was soon swept up in a harmful relationship and became pregnant.

"I really blamed myself,” she said. “I was struggling so much. I wanted to give up.” That’s when Esther found new hope through one of our outreach programs for women at risk. She received Biblical counseling, job skills training, and support to take university courses.

Esther’s tears turned to joy. “I came to know God,” she said. “I came to know skills like baking and tailoring. I can feed my kids! I’m strong because I know a God who is strong.”

Exploitation and Abuse Is a Daily Reality

Majengo, a slum community in Nairobi, Kenya, is synonymous with child prostitution and the trafficking of minors. Many young girls who grow up in the slums end up dropping out of school and are quickly ensnared in a vicious cycle of exploitation and violence.

In the absence of a parent, it is not uncommon for girls to be raising their younger siblings, leaving them to bear the weight of financial responsibility for their families while they are little more than children themselves. With little to no education and a lack of employable skills, girls as young as 12 or 13 are forced to resort to prostitution as they seek a way to support themselves and their families.

But there is hope!

How You Can Answer with Hope

Since 2012, Samaritan’s Purse has been partnering with our partner in Kenya to offer the Restoring Hope project. This training and recovery program provides practical and spiritual care for girls and women in Majengo who have experienced or are vulnerable to sexual exploitation and abuse:

  • During the one-year program, beneficiaries aged 14 to 21 learn livelihood skills and participate in business training.
  • Participants receive support for their formal education and are provided with counseling and trauma-informed care.
  • Women and girls also experience the love of God. Through the Good News found in God’s Word, they hear and see their great value in His eyes.
  • In 2024, your support will help enable 44 girls and women, plus their children, from Majengo to participate in the Restoring Hope project.

Samaritan’s Purse Canada protection projects are working to provide strength, hope, and dignity in 14 countries.
